Sometimes happiness begins long before the moment itself arrives.
There is something wonderfully comforting about having something to look forward to.
It doesn’t have to be a grand vacation, an important celebration, or a life-changing event. Sometimes it’s something wonderfully ordinary, a dinner with an old friend, a new book waiting on the nightstand, a weekend with no plans, or that first cup of coffee on a quiet Saturday morning.
The anticipation itself can become part of the joy.
Little Things Count
As we move through busy seasons of life, it’s easy to start measuring happiness by the big moments.
But life is mostly made up of the smaller ones.
Maybe you’re looking forward to planting flowers when spring arrives. Trying a restaurant you’ve been curious about. Watching the next episode of a favorite show. Taking a long walk somewhere beautiful. Or simply climbing into freshly washed sheets at the end of the day.
These things may seem small, but perhaps that’s exactly what makes them special.
They remind us that joy doesn’t always need an occasion.
Give Yourself Something to Anticipate
One of my favorite ideas is to intentionally place little moments of happiness on the calendar.
Plan the lunch.
Order the book.
Choose a place you’ve never visited and spend an afternoon exploring it.
Save an evening for a warm drink, a comfortable blanket, and a story.
Sometimes we spend so much of our time scheduling the things we have to do that we forget to make room for the things we simply want to do.
And those things matter, too.
There Are Still Chapters You Haven’t Read Yet
Perhaps that’s one of the reasons I love stories so much.
When we open a book or begin listening to a new story, we don’t know exactly what waits on the next page.
There are people we haven’t met yet. Places we haven’t seen. Conversations we haven’t had. Experiences we haven’t imagined.
The same is true of our own lives.
No matter what chapter you find yourself in today, there are still pages ahead of you.
So give yourself something to look forward to—even something very small.
And while you’re waiting for it to arrive, enjoy the anticipation.
Sometimes that’s part of the story, too.
With warmth,
Amy
